Amber is one of the few gem materials not technically considered a mineral. Formed from fossilized tree resins 10 million to 100 million years ago, it is classified as an organic gem. Resin has been known to collect insects, moss, lichen, or leaves in its sticky clutches, preserving them in perfect splendour for thousands of years. Therefore it is very likely to find an insect inside the Amber gemstone. Unlike most gemstones, inclusions can add a great deal to the value of amber – especially if these inclusions are plants or insects that have been trapped inside. Being a gemstone of organic origins, amber requires some special but simple care and handling. Amber is a rather soft gemstone and can be easily scratched. It lends itself well to earrings and necklaces where contact with hard objects is minimized. Amber always feels warm when it is touched.
Amber’s resin traps all kind of materials, and it is these inclusions which make every piece of Amber unique. The range of inclusions varies from frogs to bugs to leaves; it is not unusual to find a completely preserved fly or insect hidden inside the gem. The wealth of tiny insects trapped inside is due to the fact that when the resin leaked from the tree, it was incredibly sticky as its job was to stop insects from boring into the bark. It really is a most unique gem, providing a visual snapshot of what life was like around 50 million years ago.The gem can be warm to touch and can create static electricity when rubbed. In years gone by its ability to create static was believed by many to be a magical power. In fact the word “electricity” originates from the Greek word for Amber, “electron”.
Amber will never be called a living organism, but in its composition it fully corresponds to the composition of a living organism. Its chemical formula is C10H16O. 100 g amber is 81 g. carbon, 7.3 g Hydrogen, 6.34 g. oxygen, a little sulfur, nitrogen and mineral compounds.
Amber contains 24 chemical elements (Y, V, Mn, Cu, Ti, Zr, Al, Si, Mg, Ca, Fe, Nb, P, Pb, Zn, Cr, Ba, Co, Na, Sr, Sn, Mo , Yb), 12 of which were found in the Baltic Amber. It is important that in the Baltic amber were found gold and sodium and that heavy metals, whose composition in amber found in other parts of the world, were not found in Baltic amber.
Many people believe that Amber brings good luck and aids well being. The Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania provide much of the Amber set in jewelery today.
Amber gemstone comes in a wide variety of colors, brown, yellow, red, green, blue, orange, and white.
